Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Officers and Council of the European Teratology Society, it is my great honour and pleasure to invite you to the 40th Conference of the European Teratology Society-ETS at the Johannes Kepler University, one of the most famous Universities in Europe, in the city of Linz, Austria from 02 to 05 September 2012. At this meeting the ETS celebrates the 40th Meeting of the Society and we would like to welcome you to participate in this special event with an exciting Scientific Program in one of the most beautiful cities of Central Europe. The Scientific Program will be accompanied as usual with a social program promoting good interaction with your fellow delegates. The scientific program of the Conference reflects the opening of new and very interesting fields in Developmental Teratology and Toxicology, and the introduction of new methodologies and applications in modern embryotoxicity studies.

This year the Conference will be held together with the European Networks of Teratology Information Services-ENTIS Conference on August 31-September 2nd and a Satellite meeting by the European Society for Alternative to Animal Testing-EUSAAT which will follow the ETS Annual Conference on September 6 – 9, 2012 where the topic of “Animal Alternatives“ will include participants from the pharmaceutical, agrochemicals and industrial chemical arenas together with those from regulatory and academic institutions.

We encourage you to join and share your work at the conference and enjoy both the excellent scientific discussions and the wonderful atmosphere of this beautiful University City.

The main symposia will cover the following topics:

The programme also includes the ETS-Teratology Society debate on "Hazard vs. Risk-Based Approaches to Regulation?" the ETS and Elsevier Award Lectures, free communications and a poster session. The education course "Right Thinking – Right Answers!!" will focus on the topic of Study Interpretation and Data Analysis.

For this special 40th Annual Conference, the ETS is preparing a Celebratory Booklet including ETS pictures and recollections from those 40 years which will be provided to all ETS 2012 Conference registrants.

Linz is one of the most beautiful Austrian cities and located in the northern centre of Austria, on both sides of Danube river. The city was founded by the Romans, who called it Lentia and was first described as the provincial capital of Austria in 1490. Special highlights are the beautiful baroque facades of the buildings. Historical buildings, impressive churches and one of the largest medieval main squares in Central Europe conjoin with striking contemporary architecture to form an extraordinary city image.

Come to Linz, join with colleagues from the 40 years of ETS history and be surprised by the varied faces of the city during the day and night!

Looking forward to welcoming you in Linz, Austria on September,
Elpida-Niki Emmanouil-Nikoloussi

How to get to Linz?

By car

Linz is almost in the middle of the freeway A1 from Salzburg to Vienna (140 km to Salzburg and 200 km to Vienna). Take freeway A1 (from Salzburg to Vienna or vice versa) until "Knoten Linz". Take freeway A7 from "Knoten Linz". Follow the signs in the direction of "Freistadt, Prag" (about 15 km). Get off at the exit "Linz-Dornach". About 2 km before the exit "Linz-Dornach" the freeway crosses the Danube.

By Train

When arriving by train at the main train station in Linz, there are 2 tram lines with good connections with the Johannes Kepler University. Trams run every 5 to 7 minutes and it takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You can buy the ticket at ticket machines at the stops. Take Line 3 at the main train station and change to Line 1 (direction "Universität" – last station on the line). You can change the tram at the first stop ("Blumauerplatz"), but you do not need to hurry. Line 1 and Line 3 use the same track through the center of Linz. The last stop where it is possible to change is "Rudolfsstrasse" (right after crossing the Danube). Go on until the last stop "Universität".

By Plane

The Blue Danube Airport in Hörsching is about 15 km away from the city of Linz. Links to the city are:

  1. Bus to the main train station in Linz: The bus (red color) from the airport to the main station only leaves at 06.00, 08.00, 10.00, 12.00, 14.00, 16.00, 18.00, 20.00, 23.10 and then continue by tram.
  2. Shuttle service to the next train station (Hörsching), train to the main train station of Linz: The shuttle service is free. Then continue with by tram.
  3. Alternately, you can fly to the better-connected Vienna or Salzburg airports and take the train to Linz. There are trains almost every hour from Vienna to Linz. To check the schedule please go to the following webpage: http://www.oebb.at/en/
